The Hei Matau (Fish Hook) was the first form of adornment. In ancient times fishhooks were hand carved from stone or bone and a very necessary part of survival. A well executed fishhook meant your family and community would be fed, building your mana (power and prestige) within the hapu (tribe). It was a family’s most valuable possession, and needed to be protected against all odds, so it was worn around the neck to ensure it wouldn’t get lost or taken by other covetous men.
Naturally, over time, the wearing of a Hei Matau came to be seen as a symbol of prosperity and status. The Manaia (Guardian) is traditionally linked with the ocean, and is a representation of our spiritual guardians that watch over us.

Too Luscious has taken this ancient cultural symbol and given it a contemporary twist! All our resin jewellery is inspired by our heritage and culture, and designed to be funky, fabulous – and get attention!

How is it made?

We handcraft each and every Too Luscious taonga (treasured piece). The original Hei Matau necklace was hand carved in wood by Rotorua NZ carver Bill Scott. We hand-make our own moulds, mix, colour and pour the resin by hand, then hand finish and polish each piece. Moulds have a very limited life, so all our jewellery is made in limited numbers. Time, care, effort and a little piece of us goes into every piece, which makes each one special. They are also made with care for the environment, so you can feel good knowing you chose a product that is good to the earth.
